چکیده

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy was used to investigate the bianisotropic response of microfabricated split-ring resonators (SRRs) and the in-plane SRR–wire metamaterials. We observed a strong polarization dependence of the transmission with a polarized incident terahertz electromagnetic wave. Two transmission minima, one from the bianisotropic contribution and the other from the anisotropic plasmonic contribution, are discussed. The evolution of the two transmission minima as a function of polarization angle is also demonstrated. The effective-medium theory combined with the dispersion relations in metamaterials is employed to elucidate the experimental data effectively. © 2006 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 300.6270, 260.2110, 160.4670, 160.4760.

Controlling THz and far-IR waves with chiral and bianisotropic metamaterials

Chiral and bianisotropic metamaterials, where coupling of magnetic and electric phenomena plays an important role, offer advanced possibilities for the control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves. Such a control is particularly useful in the THz and far-IR region where natural materials do not show strong response and thus they are not offered as components for a direct realization of ele...

Tunable surface-plasmon-polariton-like modes based on graphene metamaterials in terahertz region

Plasmonic response in graphene-based metamaterials show great potential for terahertz (THz) wave manipulation. In this work, we study the tunable surface-plasmon-polariton-like modes based on graphene complementary split ring resonators (CSRRs) in THz region. Our study suggests that these modes can be generated by graphene plasmonic metamaterials due to the diffraction coupling of surface plasm...

Terahertz metamaterials and systems based on rolled-up 3D elements: designs, technological approaches, and properties

Electromagnetic metamaterials opened the way to extraordinary manipulation of radiation. Terahertz (THz) and optical metamaterials are usually fabricated by traditional planar-patterning approaches, while the majority of practical applications require metamaterials with 3D resonators. Making arrays of precise 3D micro- and nanoresonators is still a challenging problem. Here we present a versati...

Negative refraction, negative phase velocity, and counterposition in bianisotropic metamaterials with chirality

The planewave response of bianisotropic materials generally cannot be characterized by a single scalar index, as directionality of energy flow and multiple wavevectors need to be considered. This is especially significant for bianisotropic metamaterials which support negative refraction, negative phase velocity, and counterposition. By means of a numerical example based on a commonly–studied bi...

A dual band terahertz metamaterial absorber

We present the design, fabrication and characterization of a dual band metamaterial absorber which experimentally shows two distinct absorption peaks of 0.85 at 1.4 THz and 0.94 at 3.0 THz. The dual band absorber consists of a dual band electric-field-coupled (ELC) resonator and a metallic ground plane, separated by an 8μm dielectric spacer. Fine tuning of the two absorption resonances is achie...
